About the Event

We set aside two hours for Claudio Radaelli to engage our public policy research network on three issues that define us within the profession as well as helping us making progress with our projects:

1. What are our substantive definitions of 'quality of research’ in public policy and public management?

2. How does a public policy researcher become someone who publishes regularly in good journals?

3. What happens in the conversation with the reviewers, the editors and our readers out there?

Claudio will take us first at the shop floor of the political scientist, by looking at a set of fictional conference paper abstracts to let our definitions of quality emerge. We will then move to the identification of the steps of the process that leads to publication. It’s not that ‘one sends a paper to a journal’, there is a whole story to tell about what a policy scholar is for. It is a story that often starts in the trenches, it’s misleading to look only at the laurels of the list of publications on our CV. Inside this story lie episodes and memorable moments where we need to go into the back office of the public policy researcher and see what the reviewers really write and how we can possibly start a conversation with them. Claudio will share some of his experiences as editor and (with the author’s hat on) with his own reviewers.

Claudio Radaelli is Professor of Public Policy at UCL. He is the chief editor of the International Review of Public Policy, the new flagship open-access journal of the International Public Policy Association. For six years he was co-editor of the European Journal of Political Research, first with Richard Katz and then with Yannis Papadopoulos. He is co-author of Designing Research in the Social Sciences with Martino Maggetti and Fabrizio Gilardi (Sage). In 2018 he published with Claudius Wagemann an article on What did I leave out? Omitted variables in regression and qualitative comparative analysis (European Political Science).
